That sounds very sci fi to me. That's what sci fi writers do, they take some current scientific understanding, say, 'what if?' and then let their imaginations have a heap of fun and make some cool stories. Good ones will make you think. I see Dawkins here doing the same thing and having a bit of fun. Letting his creativity run wild. Being inspired. That's what it looks like from a writer's perspective. And why not? Kids love imagination and it's good to see some original ideas.

Are we alone?
by Xanthippe inthe title of this thread is the title of a chapter in the book by richard dawkins that i'm really enjoying in spite of or perhaps because of it having been written for young people.
i thought i would share a couple of paragraphs on his theories of the kind of bodies aliens on other planets might have :-.
'let's exercise our imaginations a bit more.

I was wondering..
by Dis-Member inhow are the society so happily selling off it's brooklyn real estate for untold millions to clients that they teach and believe will soon have their newly purchased properties pulverised and themselves incinerated when armageddon comes.. should they not be honest and tell all prospective buyers that they won't be owning those properties for very long?
not a word.. they are just happy to take their truck loads of cash though.
that's about as disingenuous as it gets.

Yep. And they wouldn't want to put off potential buyers by sounding like nutcakes now, would they? Their actions, however, certainly don't indicate that they believe their words about Armageddon being 'imminent'. Doublethink at its best.

Lunacy or apostasy?
by Separation of Powers inover the years i have heard some really strange beliefs shared openly with others in the congregation.
one sister, for example, stated that you could not be cremated because then "all your molecules will be spread around and jehovah couldn't put you back together.
" kinda sounds like she got stuck in a nursery rhyme there, a la humpty dumpty.. .

Oh yes nut ideas are fine as well as they're not challenging the gb or touching major areas of doctrine such as if you went around showing a scripture and saying it supports the trinity and jws should all believe the trinity. Then you'd be cooked, but not if you speculate about something silly like Jehovah picking up a kingdom hall because that's no threat to the power structure or dogma. They're peripheral to the main issues and core doctrine and are mostly written off as nut ideas.

I'am in the Penalty Box! I asked the Circuit Overseer "Who Donates Blood For Jehovah's Witnesses Blood Fragments".
by AuntConnie intold my husband to put a muzzle on my mouth over the blood dogma.
we all were driving around in field service when the topic of "which fragments would you take if you were in a car accident or cut yourself badly".
said his choice is a personal one, another sister with chronic health problems said she had no problem with the governing body's new light on taking various fragments.

Wow Aunt Connie, way to stimulate thought! Well done. You just never know what cascade you may cause in the minds of the others.

Do you detect an underlying sadness ?
by Phizzy inwhenever i talk to jw's, and even in some of the jw official videos, i detect a definite vibe of sadness coming off these people.. i am very sensitive to "atmospheres" and to peoples emotional state, you wouldn't think so, because more often than not i do not react to what i detect, i just let people get on with it.. but i do get this feeling that they are sad, probably because very, very, very deep down they realise that it is all false, maybe ?.

They are unfulfilled. I was like that. Not doing the job or hobbies you like because you're a martyr to Jehovah. I was revving in neutral and that's what jws do. It's pointless busy work, like digging holes and then filling them again, over and over and over while being told that very soon you can do whatever you like.
Then there's the oldies. They're tired and sad because they can't pioneer anymore and feel useless in a results driven organization where they're too old to get results.
Also, I started a thread on jw negativity. The glass is always half empty and they're constantly bombarded with how terrible everything is while being sold a fairytale. They're pushed from pillar to post every day by harmful thinking and tedious study and meetings. I noticed jws talk more about sickness and problems than normal people. Even a happy jw can't talk about the happy things like holidays and surfing or whatever they're doing that's making them happy because they're afraid of being judged or considered worldy for not talking about witnessing, meeting talks and doctrine.

WT and dual prophecies
by leaving_quietly ingrowing up, i knew of two, maybe three dual prophecies in the bible espoused by wt, matt 24 being the main one (last days), daniel 4 being the other (2520 years), and possibly one other, but i can't recall from back then.
nowadays, it seems as if nearly every prophecy in the bible has two fulfillments, according to wt.
prophecies in jeremiah, malachi 3:1 (yep, right from the 7/15/13... how they get the "jesus inspected the spiritual temple" thing and now that russell was a forerunner to fds 2.0), even psalm 37 has a dual prophecy... most often applied to "paradise earth", it also applied during solomon's reign, when it was a time of peace.

There are heaps of them now. It's how they get around the obvious context of the scriptures from when they were written so they can use them to control people in the here and now.

"Youth Indoctrination" (Atheist Experience show #832)
by adamah inthe 'atheist experience' cable tv show had an excellent segment today on religious indoctrination of young people, presented by the ever-smiling tracie harris; it's worth a look, with great advice, and it rings true to jw methods of raising children to a tee:.

JW Quirks
by snare&racket inwere you ever told......... .
women have one less rib,.
the human skin is made mostly of dust,.
-
Julia Orwell
Heard that men have one less rib than women, that blood transfusions gives you the personality of the blood donor, being gay is a choice known as 'alternative lifestyle', swearing or cursing comes from a belief that everything should be fair or down to luck, that marriage counsellors always recommend divorce (like they'd even have a job if they told every couple who came in, "Just get divorced!" in the first five minutes of the session).
And many more I can't think of right now.

Do you make your own soup?
by compound complex ingreetings, soup lovers:.
i have a huge kitchen at my disposal (not my own); vegetables, cans of this and that and spices are scattered about, prepared to go into a cauldron of minestrone i started a few days ago.
i'm preparing ahead so as to freeze the leftovers to heat up later at home over my hotplate.. nothing like a 6-burner gas range to simmer over!.
